Project Animal Life is an initiative by the Humanity Welfare Council, committed to creating a better future for animals. Being a compassionate, involved, and powerful force for change, we are working to build a world where: All animals are loved, valued, and respected as well as have access to nutritious food, shelter, care, and meaningful lives. All animals have the right to be protected from exploitation and abuse as well as have the right to live a life free from suffering. We strive to provide shelter to all stray animals.
Our team is a diverse group of thinkers and doers, made up of dedicated activists, compassionate humanitarians, concerned citizens, and concerned pet parents who are passionate about making a difference in the world of those who can’t speak for themselves. Our work is fueled by activism and informed by the latest science and research. We envisage that by increasing awareness and adopting innovative strategies for animal welfare, we can help shift the cultural paradigm regarding animal rights. We believe that animals deserve a better life, and we are willing to work tirelessly to ensure that they are given the opportunity to live it.
Often, behind a strong initiative, you will find a heart-wrenching personal tragedy topped with a strong conviction and a passion to create something that can make a difference. And our story is no different. For Shweta, it was the loss of a pet, and for Udita, it was the plight of abandoned animals that inspired her to take action.
Udita Saikia and Shweta Singh, are both ardent animal lovers and have always been passionate about helping animals. They are both strong advocates of adopting indie breeds and have set an example of the same by adopting stray dogs. Shweta has two indie pooches she adopted from rescue groups, while Udita is the proud owner of three canines that were abandoned by their owner. Both of them went through separate traumatic incidents that motivated them to start Project Animal Life.
A few years ago, Shweta had a dog named ‘Mario’, whom she had adopted from the streets. She and her family took great care of it as they would of a family member for many years. But one unfortunate night, the dog started panting heavily and vomiting. Shocked and worried, she tried to get in touch with every vet near her, but no one was ready to help at this late hour. She pleaded and knocked on the doors of many vets, but no one helped. Due to the lack of timely treatment, the poor soul died in her lap. That day, devastated and heartbroken by this incident, she pledged to help all animals in need rather than watch them suffer. She got in touch with Udita, who had previously expressed her desire to work for the benefit of animals. Udita, a zoophilist herself, has been feeding and taking care of injured or sick animals in her neighbourhood since she was a small girl. While on holiday in Shillong, she was passing by a hotel in the evening when she spotted two beautiful dogs tied up outside a hotel. Since she always had a soft spot for animals, she was curious to know about those fur babies. When she asked the security guard about them, he told her that the hotel owner was planning to get rid of the two dogs, saying that he didn’t want to keep them because he already had many foreign-bred dogs and there was no place for these two local dogs anymore. The security guard didn’t want to just leave them anywhere to fend for themselves and was instead trying to give them to someone. Shocked to hear this, she immediately decided to adopt both of them and thanked the security guard for his kindness and for not just leaving the pooches on the streets. That was the moment she realized she couldn’t just stand by and see animals like them get homeless. She decided to take matters into her own hands and do something to keep the stray and abandoned animals safe and provide them shelter. Hence, Project Animal Life came into being.
The Humanity Welfare Council has always worked behind the scenes for the welfare of animals and has strong animal advocates on its team. Thus, it initiated Project Animal Life to provide lifetime support and assistance to the animals as well as create awareness about animal well-being. HWC has been helping animals by feeding them and providing them with medical care. During recent catastrophes in India like COVID-19 and floods, when there was no one for the voiceless, the HWC team worked tirelessly to provide food and medical care for animals in many neighbourhoods.
OUR MISSION
Our aim is to bring about positive change for animals by working at the intersections of the human-animal bond, farm animal welfare, conducting mass sterilization drives for stray animals, creating awareness about the exploitation of foreign breeds, and advocating the adoption of indie breeds.
OUR VISION
We endeavour to build a centralized platform that will provide round-the-clock assistance and support for every animal-related query. We envision creating a safe haven for animals where they can live in peace and comfort, and where humans respect the rights of other animals.
